According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, about 4.0 million Australians (16% of the total population) have back problems. In this video, Dr Russo focuses on the differences between chronic and acute low back pain.
For acute low back pain the cause is typically that of muscular spasm and it will generally resolve either spontaneously or related to appropriate stretching and exercise.
For chronic low back pain there is obviously an underlying cause of the pain. Most of the time that can be determined and occasionally becomes unclear what that is. In terms of the causes for chronic low back pain, we will typically look at the lumbar disc as a source of pain, the lumbar facet joint, muscle spasm or sometimes irritation of superficial nerves as the cause.
The predominant or basic treatment for low back pain should be exercise and so an exercise prescription is the appropriate thing that your therapist should give you; that forms the baseline and then there can be additional treatments on top of that.
Sometimes medication is involved, other times there can be procedures that are appropriate for chronic low back pain.
