Hunter Pain Specialists Mission Statement

To deliver an unparalleled level of care, treatment and education to people living with persistent pain.

Motivated by our humanity, we will deliver this through our clinical diligence, ongoing research and education.

We pledge our efforts to improve the lives of those in need with compassion and humility.

History Of Hunter Pain Specialists

Dr Russo gained his MBBS in Sydney and furthered his qualifications in England, gaining a DA (UK), FANZCA (Syd) and his pain specialty FFPMANZCA (Nctle). He devoted his career to anaesthesia and pain medicine but now concentrates all of his time to the pain medicine specialty.

Dr Marc Russo became increasingly aware there was an overwhelming need for a private pain clinic for Newcastle and surrounding areas. He developed and opened Hunter Pain Specialists (former Hunter Pain Clinic) in November 1999, working out of a consult room at Lingard Private Hospital.

In 2001, he purchased Hamilton Day Surgery and used this as his consultation rooms. After some refurbishment, he opened the Hamilton Day Surgery Centre as a functional unit for pain procedures in 2002.

In 2002, Hamilton Day Surgery Centre became a pain specialty facility where patients would have their treatment and be cared for by our specialist team of doctors, nurses, radiology and administrative staff. Hamilton Day Surgery Centre prides itself on personalised care and experience for all patients and carers. We aspire to deliver patient-focused, quality healthcare in a personal, professional and caring manner.

Dr Russo had the vision to create a business that would incorporate a multi-disciplinary approach to pain management. Dr Russo united a core group of health professionals to assist in delivering this unique service first to Newcastle.

In 2003, he incorporated Hunter Pain Specialists and opened Hunter Specialist Medical Centre (HSMC) in Broadmeadow, Newcastle. Hunter Specialist Medical Centre provides a number of important services within one building, minimising the inconvenience and reducing travelling for our patients.

In 2005, he opened Hunter Clinical Research, which is a division of Hunter Pain Specialists. Hunter Clinical Research is now operating under the name of Genesis Research Services. Genesis Research Services undertakes both company-sponsored and investigator-initiated research into treatments for pain management of chronic pain conditions. Research is important as it advances patient care and treatments.

The businesses that constitute the multidisciplinary team at Hunter Specialist Medical Centre (HSMC) are: Hunter Pain Specialists, Workplace Physiotherapy, Innervate Pain Management, Genesis Research Services and Dr Pek Ang's Psychiatric Services. These businesses continue to achieve a significant number of positive results for our patients.

This impressive professional team at Hunter Pain Specialists and HSMC provide the highest standard of service to our community and beyond. With the growth and expansion of our services at Hunter Pain Specialists, it spreads to capture a larger demographic area covering a massive 876,000km2 in NSW alone and treats over 6,000 patients per year.

Dr Russo has brought Hunter Pain Specialists into the national and international arena. He resides on many international advisory committees and is considered an expert in his field of Pain Medicine and Neuromodulation.

In 2015, Dr Willem Volschenk joined the team.
