Dr Aidan McParland is our new Fellow.
Dr Aidan McParland is a specialist consultant in pain medicine and emergency medicine with 15 years of experience in academic and clinical practice. His early work in pain led to award-winning research in neurogenetics and chronic pain, including recognition from the Genetics Society of America for discoveries in central sensitisation.
He holds a Master of Science in Neurogenetics and Chronic Pain and completed medical training at the University of Toronto, followed by FRCPC fellowship training in Emergency
Medicine at the University of British Columbia. Dr McParland completed Fellowship training through the Faculty of Pain Medicine (ANZCA) at the Royal North Shore Hospital and
Hunter Pain Specialists. His training focused on holistic and multidisciplinary pain management, with advanced training in interventional techniques and neuromodulation. He is currently undertaking further advanced neuromodulation training through Queen Mary University of London.
Dr McParland has authored more than twenty peer-reviewed publications spanning neuromodulation, cannabinoids, neuropathic pain, cognitive performance under stress, and systems design for pain care globally. His work has appeared in leading journals including
Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Medicine, Molecular Pain, Journal of Neuroscience, The British Medical Journal, Academic Medicine, and The Journal of Pain. He is also a contributing author to the Bonica’s Management of Pain 6th Edition chapter on Spinal Cord Stimulation. Dr McParland has been actively involved in medical device design and innovation, and he maintains academic practice and fellowship teaching appointment at the Royal North Shore Hospital.
Outside of clinical medicine, Dr McParland played soccer at the National level. He also works closely with Surfing Medicine International, the World Surf League, and the Olympic Committee on concussion protocol development, including a return-to-play protocol formally adopted by the Olympic Surf Committee.
He brings to practice a unique blend of scientific depth, clinical skill, and systems-level thinking, anchored by a long-standing commitment to the care of people living with pain. Dr
